Berneice Cathelen Vancil, 91, of Herrin, passed away on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at 5:55 pm at Shawnee Christian Nursing Center.

Berneice was born April 5, 1925 in Cambria the daughter of George and Eva (Walker) Atterberry. She married Virgil Vancil on January 26, 1946 in Herrin and together they shared over 43 years of marriage, until his death on December 31, 1989.

She was a member of the 1st Methodist Church in Herrin, and the Willing Workers Quilters Club. Berneice enjoyed sewing, crocheting and embroidery.

Survivors include her;

Daughter – Betty Lavender of Energy

Daughter – Sheena Vancil and husband Dennis of Blairsville

Son – Curtis Vancil and wife Lynn of Thompsonville

Two sisters;

Daisey Holland and husband Milton of Herrin

Peggy Crow and husband Ray of Herrin

Brother – Carrold Atterberry and wife Dorothy of Herrin

Several nieces and nephews

Preceded by her Parents, Husband, two sons, Ray and Rickie Vancil, three sisters, Rosalie Atterberry, Anna Lee Upchurch, Shirley Spiller, two brothers, Henry and Harold Atterberry and son-in-law Dennis Lavender.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at 1 pm at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin with Rev. Don Colson officiating. Burial will follow in Blairsville Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 11 am until the time of service at the funeral home.

The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff of Shawnee Christian Nursing Center and Hospice of Southern Illinois for the wonderful care that was given to their Mother.

For those who prefer memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Heart Association. Envelopes will be available and accepted at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home, 201 South 13th Street, Herrin, Illinois 62948.

    Curt and all the family - I am so sorry to hear this news regarding your mother. I will never forget the shenanigans she pulled while at Shawnee Christian. Although this is not a happy time, please remember that she is in a much better place now with no more pain and suffering. Hugs and prayers to all of you.
