Wanda L. Fietsam

Wanda L Fietsam, age 90, of Marion, Illinois,  passed away Wednesday, July 5, 2023 at her home in Marion, Illinois.

Wanda was born April 23, 1933 in Marion, Illinois, a daughter of Roy and Vivian (Higgens)  Sweeney.  Wanda grew up in Marion and attended Marion Schools.  Early in life she worked at West Side Drug Store, at the soda fountain.  One day at work a handsome young man came in for ice cream and nature took its course.  She later married that fella who turned out to be the love of her life, his name was Robert E. Fietsam and they married on September 14, 1951 in Marion, IL at the Zion United Church of Christ.  The young couple owned a farm and Wanda quickly took to duties of a farm wife.  Together they farmed and started a family.  Wanda was in charge of  raised 5000 laying hens for Purina.  She grew a big garden and canned her vegetables and liked to sew and ride horses.  Later in life she and her husband traveled quite a  bit.  They eventually wintered in Florida, coming home every spring to see that the boys got the fields worked and planted.  

Wanda was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ and member of the Deborah Circle Ladies Group.    

She is survived by two sons, Fred (Linda) Fietsam of Marion, IL, Jerry Fietsam of Marion, IL, and son-in-law Jim Freeman of Marion, IL; seven grandchildren, Christy (Rob) Underwood, John (Kodi) Fietsam, Jennifer (Corey) McCuan, Jeffrey (Felicia) Fietsam, Lori Fietsam, and James (Kira) Fietsam; step grandchild Andrew (Alice) Freeman;  nine great-grandchildren, Tyler Underwood, Kane Fietsam, Zachary Underwood, Halle Jo Rieger, Alexa Lynn McCuan, Bryant Dale Rieger, Emersyn Fietsam, Jackson Fietsam, and Sophie Rae Fietsam; one great-great-grandchild, Karsyn Fietsam.  She is preceded in death by her husband Robert E. Fietsam; daughter, Debra Freeman; daughter-in-law Pam Fietsam; her parents, Roy and Vivian Sweeney; two sisters, Dorothy Tottleben and Louise Morris; and her father & mother in law, Erwin (Dora Strohmeier) Fietsam.

Visitation will be Sunday, July 9th, 2023 from 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 9, 2023, 2:00 PM at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home with Rev. John Holst officiating. Burial will follow at Davis Prairie Cemetery in Marion. 

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Zion UCC, American Diabetes Association, or American Heart Association.
