Thomas Eugene Porter, MD, 76 of Herrin, IL passed away on May 24, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born December 16, 1941, nine days after Pearl Harbor, to the late Eugene H. and Ellen (Albers) Porter in Murphysboro, IL. Thomas grew up in Murphysboro, IL attending Murphysboro High School and graduated from there in 1959. He attended Carthage College and graduated in 1963. He then completed his education by getting his doctorate from the University of Illinois, College of Medicine in Chicago. Following his doctorate he did his internship in Cook County Hospital in Illinois. From 1972 to 1976 he worked at Herrin Hospital. While in practice there, he delivered 200 babies in three years. He later had his own private practice in Goreville, IL from 1976 until he retired in 2007. Thomas was an avid hunter and trapper, who enjoyed many fishing trips to Canada. He was also an avid runner and biker. He enjoyed and excelled in many road races as well as triathlons, including the River to River races. Later in life, Thomas was inducted in the 1958 Murphysboro High School Hall of Fame as part of the undefeated football team. Survivors include: Wife- Beverly Bible Daughters- Laura Kobrick Melissa Morley (Mark) Angela Janczak (David) Diana Porter Grandchildren- Kaci Wooldridge Abby Wooldridge Alec Morley Ty Morley Asher Morley Taggart Morley Great Grandchild- Theodore Sheets Brothers- William Porter Richard Porter He is preceded in death by his parents. A special thanks goes to caregivers, Liz (Stinson)Colgan, Geraldine Holder, and Rob Wilkie. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at 2 pm in Whiteash Freewill Baptist Church. A visitation will be held there from 12 noon until the time of service. A fellowship will follow. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Illinois Parkinsons Group, P.O. Box 266, Carbondale, IL 62903. Donations will be used for Parkinson’s research. Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin is assisting the family with final arrangements.
