Sophie Marie McDonald

Carterville- Sophie Marie McDonald, age 97, of Carterville, passed away at 4:05 AM on Monday, May 21, 2018 at Parkway Manor in Marion. Sophie was born in Shawmut, Montana on July 19, 1920, the daughter of Kamiel and Margaret (Claeyes) Driessens. She attended Illinois State University, where she met her future husband. She married W.R. (William Richard) McDonald May 31, 1941 in Sterling, Illinois. Together, they shared 63 years. He preceded her in death on August 8, 2001. Mrs. McDonald was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. She was a very special lady who loved living life. In her younger years, she took great pride in raising her family, sewing clothes for them and herself. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She and her husband had the times of their lives swimming, dancing, playing cards, and attending parties and gatherings. Many of these activities she continued even later in life. Since 1991, Sophie has been very active in the Herrin Senior Center. Sophie will be missed, but her values and lessons will live on for generations. Survivors include two sons- Douglas and Pamela McDonald of Carterville Duane and Madeleine McDonald of Des Plaines Four Grandchildren Ten Great Grandchildren She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two sons- Daniel and David. Memorial graveside services will be held at 11am on Friday, May 25, 2018 at San Carlo Cemetery with Monsignor Ken Schaefer officiating. Family and friends are asked to gather directly at the cemetery. Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin is assisting the family with final arrangements.
