Ramona 'Mona' Ann (Wright) Hays, 81, of Herrin Illinois, passed away at her home, surrounded by her family on November 11, 2022, at 9:33 PM.


Ramona was born on July 31, 1941, in Anna, Illinois, the daughter of Audie Sherman and Vesta Mae (Miller) Wright.


Ramona married Morris 'Hank' Hays on June 7, 1976 in Herrin, Illinois. They had been married for 22 years. He preceded her in death on November 16, 1998.


Ramona is survived by her loving children, Danny Jenkins (Kim) of Boggstown, Indiana, Terri Jenkins of Energy, Illinois, Michelle Steh of Herrin, Illinois; granddaughter, Kaitlyn Smith of Herrin, Illinois, stepdaughter Cristin Delashmit, step-grandson Brock Bain, brother-in-law, Dr. William Hays (Pam) of Herrin, Illinois, sister-in-law Mary Lou Wright of Anna, Illinois, and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Audie and Vesta Wright, husband, Hank, brother, Gene Wright, and sisters, Ethelene Lyerla (Collin), Nellie Mae Dillow (George), Carol Lee Wright, stepdaughter Holly Ann Hays, and niece Kelly Sue Hays.


Ramona graduated from Anna Jonesboro High School in 1959. She was a real estate agent for many years prior to her employment with the state of Illinois where she retired from the Department of Health and Human Services. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Herrin, Illinois.


As a child, Ramona loved spending time with her family and playing pinochle with her dad. Through school, she developed a special bond with her girlfriends and held tight to those friendships throughout her adult life. She loved spending time with her best friend, Carolyn Anderson, at her family's apple orchard in Indiana. Ramona was strong, funny, witty, loving, and so much more. She loved her kids, family, and friends fiercely. She never backed down from a challenge and always had a witty remark and a great sense of humor. She was an avid card player, reader, and coffee drinker.


The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Alberto Cuartas and the staff for all their loving care and compassion shown to Ramona.


Funeral services will be held at 11am on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin with Pastor Bradley Dexter officiating. Burial will follow at Egyptian Memorial Gardens in Energy. A time of visitation will be held from 5-8pm on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.


For those who prefer, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Residential Hospice. Envelopes will be available and accepted at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home; 201 S. 13th Street; Herrin, IL 62948.
