Paul Junior Neber

August 20, 1925 — March 3, 2019

Paul Junior Neber, 93, of Marion, passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2019 at 1:58 pm at his home in Marion. Paul was born August 20, 1925 in Wolfe Creek the son of Paul N. and Linnie Afton (Mann) Neber. He married Hattie Roma Manier on July 7, 1945 in Marion and together they shared over 59 years of marriage until her death on September 28, 2004. He was a Christian and a member of the Saline Masonic Lodge in Goreville and the United Mine Workers of America. Paul was a US Army Veteran who served his country courageously during the battle of the bulge in WWII.  He was taken prisoner while delivering troops and was held as a prisoner of war overseas for many years.  Once honorably discharged, he returned home and began a career as a mechanic at the Chevy garage in Marion and then as a mechanic for his own business, Neber & Strickland.  He finally retired as a Temple Operator for AMAX Coal.  Even retired, he continued farming and raising cattle on his family's land.  He loved all animals, big and small.  Such was his love that as his eyesight began to fail, he was once spotted spoon feeding a litter of skunks which he thought were kittens.  He was a talented gardener and was known for his large produce.  He was a perfectionist and jack of all trades who could fix anything and never bought a part.  He completely rebuilt a ’47 Jeep. Survivors include his; Daughter – Marita (Scott) Nallen of Marion Two granddaughters; Dawn (Brad) Brown of Marion Jenny Lynn (Darrin) Clark of Marion Four grandchildren; Madison Brown of Marion Noah Brown of Marion Jake Clark of Marion Luke Clark of Marion Preceded by his Parents and wife – Hattie Neber. Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at 2 pm at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home with Rev. Darrin Clark and Rev. Bill Schell officiating. Burial will follow at Wolf Creek Cemetery.  Military rites will be presented by members of the Marion VFW Post #1301, American Legion Post #147 and National Guard Flag Detail Unit.  Visitation will be Tuesday from Noon until the time of service at the funeral home.  Masonic services will be presented by the Saline Lodge #339 A.F. & A.M. For those who prefer memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children. Envelopes will be available and accepted at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home, 800 North Market Street, Marion, Illinois  62959.
