John "Deon" Bennett, age 83, of rural Marion, Illinois, passed away Friday, December 24, 2021 at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion, Illinois.
Deon was born April 14, 1938 in Herrin, Illinois, a son of Hartsie and Vivian (Pritchett) Bennett. He married Norma L Edwards on December 07, 1957 in Marion, IL. He was a member of UMWA and Arnold View Baptist Church.
Deon grew up in Marion and attended Marion schools. Most of his working career was in the coal mines. He last worked at Peabody Coal. He then worked as Custodian at First United Methodist Church. Deon loved watching John Wayne westerns, listening to Elvis Presley, attending races at Southern IL Raceway, restoring his 1964 Cadillac, having coffee with friends and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Norma L. Edwards of Marion, IL; two children, Tamela A. (Terry) Faulkner of Marion, Illinois and Timothy D. (Dita) Bennett of Fredericksburg, VA; five grandchildren, Tyson B. (Sarah) Faulkner, Trisha A. Faulkner (Fiance Justin Etherton), Kaysha R. Bennett (Fiance Jordan Dalton), Rea O. Bennett, and Leka J. Bennett; and his Great Grandchildren, Jase Z. Dalton, Emma R. Dalton, Ezra W. Faulkner, Jaxon Dalton, and Ariana D. Faulkner. He is preceded in death by his parents, Hartsie J. and Vivian Bennett and his Brother & Sister In Law, Gary G. (Marilyn) Bennett, Sister & Bro In Law Delorse (Beed) James, and Sister & Bro In Law Carolyn (Gary) Tanner.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 4th, 2022 from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 AM at Mitchell Hughes Funeral Home, with Rev. Ivan Ryan and Rev. Adam Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Poordo. The family requests, those that attend please wear a mask and observe social distancing procedures.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Residential Hospice. Envelopes will be available and accepted at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home, 800 North Market Street, Marion, Illinois 62959.
