Herrin- James Matthew McHargue, age 89, of Herrin, passed away peacefully at 5:28am on Tuesday, March 14, 2017, surrounded by his loving family, at Herrin Hospital.
James was born in Herrin on March 10, 1928, the son of Alexander and Hattie (Woodward) McHargue. He married Edna Louise Young in Herrin on December 15, 1945. She preceded him in death on October 11, 1999.
Prior to his retirement, Jim had worked for more than 47 years as a gravedigger for Southern Illinois Vault Company. With his hobby of CB radios, he claimed the handle of “Running Bear”.
Jim was a Christian and had attended the Church of God before his health prevented him. He was a very hard worker who enjoyed fishing, sprint car races, yard work and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother- Jesse, wife- Louise, daughter- Phyllis Ann Sanders, and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Monday, March 20, 2017 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin with Rev. Don Colson officiating. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-8pm on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home.
