Freeman Spur- Geneva Mays, 99, of Freeman Spur, passed away at 12:30 AM, Thursday, January 12, 2017 at Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin.
Geneva was born on August 10, 1917 in Freeman Spur to Rome and Maude (Davis) Keeler. She married Valley D. Mays on January 10, 1936 in Herrin. He preceded her in death on May 15, 1977. She later married George Freeman Hutton on September 17, 1982 in Detroit, MI. HE preceded her in death on September 10, 1984.
She was a hardworking woman who raised ten children. She formerly worked at Allen’s in Herrin.
Geneva loved to attend church and was currently a member of Union Gospel Mission Church in Herrin. She formerly attended Freeman Chapel in Freeman Spur. She was a woman of tremendous faith who spent every night on her knees praying for her children and grandchildren. She lived for Christ and was a former Sunday school teacher. In her spare time she enjoyed bowling, playing board games with her grandchildren, exercising, sewing and spending time outdoors- fishing and growing her beautiful flowers.

Daughter- Charlotte Kerrigan and husband Charles of Freeman Spur
Son- George Mays of Energy
Son- Larry Mays of Energy
Daughter- Annette Branche and husband Dale of Freeman Spur

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, and six children- Valley Mays, Roy Mays, Deloris Mays, Ronald Mays, Ruth Tolbert and Donald Mays, 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Rev. Robert Jilek and Rev. Larry Cook will officiate. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until time of service, Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.
