Elmer Eugene Atkins Jr.

Elmer Eugene Atkins Jr., age 59, of Marion, Illinois, passed away Friday, September 8, 2023 at his home in Marion, Illinois.

Elmer was born November 01, 1963 in Herrin, Illinois, a son of Elmer and Edna L. (Leeper) Atkins. He married Tina D. Murphy and she passed away March 14, 2007. He remarried Catherine L. Heath on October 16, 2022 in Johnston City, IL. Elmer grew up in Marion, IL and attended Marion Schools. He joined and served with the US Army. When he returned home he worked for Parrish Trucking as a truck driver. He later owned and operated J.T. Recycling in Marion and later owned Affordable Auto and South Court Auto in Marion. He was currently employed at Quality Inn as Head of Maintenance. Elmer loved being outdoors boating, fishing, or hunting. He liked building and fixing things as he was a talented "Jack of All Trades".

He is survived by his wife Catherine L. Atkins of Marion, IL; two children, April D. (Thomas) Calbreath of West Frankfort, IL and James R. Atkins of Tampa, FL; two grandchildren, Kevin D. (Mallory) Correll and Kassie B. (Coby) Jones; and two sisters, Elizabeth Pinkston of Carbondale, IL and Bertha J. (Bradley) Phillips of Marion, IL. He is preceded in death by one son, David E. Atkins; his parents, Elmer E. and Edna L. Atkins Sr.; and his First Wife, Tina D. Atkins.

Visitation will be Thursday, September 14th, 2023 from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 14, 2023, 11:00 AM at Mitchell Hughes Funeral Home with Rev. Keith Owens officiating. Burial will follow at County Line Cemetery in Creal Springs.
