Dorothy Harris

Herrin- Dorothy Harris, 95, of Herrin, formerly of Freeman Spur, passed away at 3:50 PM, Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Herrin Hospital. Dorothy was born on November 15, 1921 in Freeman Spur to Robert Merriam and Betty (Jacob) Chandler. She married Jesse Sanders on April 13, 1940 in Perryville, MO. He preceded her in death in June of 1982. She later married James Harris on May 6, 1989 in Freeman Spur. He preceded her in death in April of 1999. She was retired from Olin Matheson where she worked 20 years making ammunition in the Ordill area. She was a member of the Christian Life Center in Herrin. In her spare time, she enjoyed spending good times with family playing cards and cooking chicken and dumplings and baking pies. She was good at craftwork and liked to embroidery and quilt. Survivors include- Daughter- Virginia Uppinghouse and husband David of Salem, OR Son- Jerry Sanders and wife Pat of Gibson City Daughter- Rita Diane Carrera and husband Charlie of Marshall, MN Daughter- Cheryl Fitzgerald and husband Brent of Herrin Step daughter- Mary Fisher and husband Jon of Hoffman Estates Ten grandchildren Nine Great Grandchildren Two Great Great grandchildren She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, three brothers and four sisters. A graveside memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, April 1, 2017 at Egyptian Memorial Gardens in Energy. Friends and family are asked to meet directly at the graveside.  Her son in law, Rev. Brent Fitzgerald will officiate. Burial will follow at Egyptian Memorial Gardens. Funeral arrangements were made through Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Memorial donations are suggested to Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home/ 201 S. 13th St/ Herrin, IL 62948.
