Bill Sanford Dunning

Bill Sanford Dunning, 91, of Herrin, passed away on Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at 11:45 pm at Shawnee Senior Living.

Bill was born October 27, 1929 in Herrin the son of Ezra and Martha (Farmer) Dunning.  He married Madaline Mamino on September 1, 1956 in Herrin and together they have shared over 64 years of marriage.

He was an Army veteran, proudly serving his country during the Korean War. Bill had worked at various jobs, including Norge, Allen’s, he owned a potato chip business, a gas attendant, a janitor at Herrin High School and retired from Olin's.  He liked to fix things, fiddle with things.  Bill had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening.  He was interested in stereos, making surround sound and watching movies.  His other hobbies included fishing, boating and riding motorcycles. Bill was a loving husband and father.

Daughter – Debbie Stone (Jim) of Herrin
Son – Mike Dunning (Pam) of Beaver, PA
Son – Jeff Dunning of Herrin
Six Grandchildren, Kristin Brooke (Molly) of Texas, Mathew Dunning (Emily) of Pennsylvania, Andrew Dunning of New York, Tonya Stone of Minnesota, Kyle Stone of Herrin, and Sierra Bytnar (Matt) of Herrin.
Eight Great Grandchildren, Maya Brooke of Texas, Liam and Charly Dunning of Pennsylvania, Cameron, Samuel, and Jacob Pearson of Minnesota, Audrey and Joey Bytnar of Herrin.
Sister – Dorothy Rogers of Pickens, SC
Several nieces, nephews and cousins

Preceded by his Parents, Daughter – Karen Dunning, Sisters – Maxine Ridgeway, Marjorie June Dunning, Patricia Irene Dunning and an infant brother.

Funeral mass will be Saturday, December 5, 2020 at 1 pm at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church with Father Tom Barrett officiating.  Burial will follow in San Carlo Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Honor Guard Ritual Team comprised of the Carterville American Legion Post 347, the Herrin American Legion Post 645, the Herrin VFW Post 1567, and the United States National Guard Flag Honor Detail. Visitation will be Saturday from 11 am until 12:45 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home.

Due to health concerns related to the COVID-19 virus, social distancing and the wearing of masks will be required.
