Betty Jean Evans

  Betty Jean Evans, 93, of Marion, passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 2:17 pm at Heartland Regional Medical Center.    Betty was born May 24, 1923 in Paulton the daughter of Nathan and Betty (Smiley) Stone. Her Mom was born in Williamson County, Illinois, her Father was born in Putnam County, Tennessee, he was a coal miner. She married Jesse Albert “Tut” Evans on December 24, 1941 in St. Charles, Missouri, and together they shared over 57 years of marriage until his death on November 19, 1999.    Betty was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.  She was also a member of United Methodist Women.    Betty had worked at Universal Match (Olin Mathinson) in the Ordil area.  She also worked as a clerk at Woolworth in LaGrange, Illinois, and a clerk at Sears Roebuck in St. Louis, Missouri.  Most of her work years were spent at Bay’s Grocery in Marion.    Betty was a genealogist who enjoyed finding fellow genealogist.  She also attended art classes and left some paintings.  Her most enjoyable interest was cooking and entertaining friends and family.    Survivors include her;   Son – Jesse Douglas Evans and wife Susan of New Brighton, Minnesota    Preceded by her Parents, Husband – “Tut”, infant daughter – Brenda Sue Evans, two brothers – Bob Stone and Leslie Bradley.    Funeral services will be Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 1 pm at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Ozment and Rev. Jim Lambert officiating.  Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery.  Visitation will be Friday evening from 5 – 8 pm at the funeral home.    For those who prefer memorials may be made to the American Heart Association – Go Red for Women.  Envelopes will be available and accepted at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home, 800 North Market Street, Marion, IL  62959.
