Ben Martin Chamness

Ben Martin Chamness, 88, of Marion, passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2016 at 7:20 am at Parkway Manor.  Ben was born January 11, 1928 in Marion the son of Lee and Esther (Hunter) Chamness.  He married Betty McClellan on July 10, 1954 in Marion and together they have shared over 61 years of marriage.  He retired from the Street Department for the City of Marion after 30 years.  Ben attended 1st Baptist Church in Marion and was a member of the Laborer’s Union #773.  Survivors include his; Wife – Betty McClellan Chamness of Marion Son – Jack Chamness of Marion Son – Earl Chamness and wife Brenda of Marion Granddaughters;   Diana Hoover and husband Toby of Marion   Debra Perkins and husband Kevin of Thompsonville Great grandchildren;   Krista Hoover of Marion   Brittani Snyder and husband Justin of Marin   Amber Terry of Benton   Corey, Alex and Jesse Perkins of Thompsonville Great Great Grandchildren;   Emma Coffey and Jaxon Terry of Benton Brother -  Sam Chamness and wife Ann of Marion Nieces & nephews;   Cheryl Shadowens of Energy   Mark Chamness of Carbondale   Barbara Vaughan of Marion   James Lee Chamness of DeSoto   Kim Chamness of Carbondale   Steve Chamness of South Carolina   Delbert Chamness of South Carolina   Susie Chamness of South Carolina   Brenda Alcorn of Ohio   Sharon Whitehead of Georgia   David Rodd of Florida   Patti Fagan of Tennessee   Peggy Rodd of Ohio   Kathy Rodd of Washington   Joe McClellan of West Frankfort  Preceeded by his Parents, sisters – Florence Rodd, Maxine Horton, Violet Bateman, Dimple Travelstead and brothers – Tom, Delbert and Bob Chamness.  Funeral services will be at 1 pm on Thursday, May 12, 2016 at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home with Rev. Dennis Mohr officiating, the eulogy will be given by Mayor Bob Butler.  Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 5 – 8 pm at the funeral home.  For those who prefer memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.  Envelopes will be available and accepted at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home, 800 North Market Street, Marion, Illinois.
