Barbara Ann Darter

Barbara Ann Darter, age 69, of Herrin, Illinois,  passed away Monday, March 4, 2024 at her home in Herrin, Illinois.

Barbara was born September 15, 1954 in Herrin, Illinois, a daughter of Carl and Dollie (Branson) Gibbs. Barb grew up in Whiteash, IL.  She married the love of her life, William H. Darter Jr. on March 14, 1969 in Franklin County.  She worked with her husband at their business, Darter Automotive in Herrin, IL.  She later worked as a caregiver at Shawnee Nursing Home.  

She and her husband loved talking on CB Radio.  Her handle was Sandpaper Lady, as she also enjoyed woodworking with her husband and fishing.   

She is survived by two children, Judy Keeling and William H. (Jennifer) Darter III; five grandchildren, Andrea R. (Justin) Dallacosta, Brittney Bailey,  Jennifer Darter, Johnathon Darter, and Joshua Dallacosta; three great-grandchildren, Connor Dallacosta, Thomas Dallacosta, and Corbin Dallacosta; and one brother, Sam Gibbs.  She is preceded in death by her husband William H. Darter Jr.; her parents, Carl and Dollie Gibbs; and two siblings, Fay Gibbs and Bill Gibbs.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 9, 2024, 10:00 AM at Herrin City Cemetery with Rev. Donny Colson officiating. Family and friends are asked to gather directly at the cemetery.

Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin is assisting the family with the final arrangements.
