Richard "Dick" Maxey

Herrin- Richard Don “Dick” Maxey, 86, of Herrin, passed away at 9:30 AM< Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at the Veterans Administration Center in Marion. Dick was born on February 6, 1932 in Herrin to Loy Clifford and Alice Leona (Bush) Maxey. HE married his beloved wife of 59 years, Loretta Murphy on July 3, 1959 in his front yard in Herrin. HE was a US Air Force Veteran who served his country bravely during the Korean War. He was the Middle weight Champion of the Army and even beat Joey Giardello who was then middle weight champ of the world. Once honorably discharged, he returned home and began working as Foreman at Norge in Herrin for many years, he worked as a butcher at Blue Bell in DuQuoin, but retired as Foreman at Turco in DuQuoin. He was a Christian and member of Hurricane Memorial Baptist Church in Herrin and a member of the Herrin Masonic Lodge. He was an avid bowler who also enjoyed going to auctions, going to Turkey shoots, riding horses and fishing with his family. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Survivors include- Wife- Loretta Maxey of Herrin Son- Jeff Richard Maxey and wife Vanessa of Johnston City Son- John Clifford Maxey of Herrin Four grandchildren Six great grandchildren Sister- Delores Cornell of Herrin Many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter- Keely Jo Maxey, four brothers and two sisters. The funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM, Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Rev. Don Colson will officiate. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. Military rites will be performed at graveside by the American Legion and VFW posts with assistance from the Illinois National Guard. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM, Saturday at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Memorial donations are suggested to the family and will be accepted at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home / 201 S. 13th St/ Herrin, IL 62948.
