Freeman Spur- Arnold Walter Edson, age 88, of Freeman Spur, passed away at 2:24pm on May 23, 2021 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Arnold was born on December 10, 1932 in Becker, Minnesota, the son of Walter William and Ruth Marie (Young) Edson. A proud United States Navy Veteran, he served in the Vietnam and Korean Wars. While enlisted, he served as an electronics technician and later worked twenty years for the Federal Government in the Department of Transportation. He retired from the military on January 2, 1993.

He married Jeanette Restivo on September 29, 1956 in West Frankfort. She preceded him in death on October 13, 2012. He later married Debbie Menckowski in Freeman Spur on October 13, 2018. She survives.

Survivors include his wife- Debbie Edson of Freeman Spur

Daughter- Sherie Lynn Edson of Freeman Spur

Daughter- Sandra Edson-Bowers and husband David of Carbondale

Five Step-children- Amy (Rich) Brower of Carterville

     April (Ashley) Noto of Carterville

     Angela (Rick) Tessone of Freeman Spur

     Rickey Menckowski of Johnston City

     Chad Menckowski of Freeman Spur

Four grandchildren-

     Mindi McCown and husband Michael Dodig of Freeman Spur
     Anthony Beck of Freeman Spur
     Andrew Beck and wife Jeni of Freeman Spur
     Angelica Joiner of Freeman Spur
Several Step-Grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great-grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife- Jeanette, daughter- Susan Annette Edson, and two sisters- Lucille Ann Roberts and Arlene Marie Neuman.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 PM on Thursday, May 27, 2021 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Rev. Don Colson will officiate. Burial will follow at San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin with military rites conducted by the Carterville American Legion Post 347, the Herrin American Legion Post 645, the Herrin VFW Post 1567, and the United States Navy Honor Guard Teams. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM Thursday at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.
