Marion- Velma Dean Trotter, age 92, of Marion, passed away at 7:53am on Sunday, July 19, 2020 at her home, with her children by her side.

Velma was born in Wayne County, Illinois, the daughter of Lyde and Opal (Williams) Thomason.  She married Frank Lloyd Trotter in Mount Vernon on August 3, 1945. Velma was a homemaker, and was proud to assume the role of a pastor’s wife, which she did graciously. Rev. Frank Lloyd Trotter preceded her in death on September 2, 2000.

Mrs. Trotter was a member of Third Baptist Church in Marion. She was also a member of the Heartland Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, where she had volunteered in the ICU waiting room.

Survivors include:

Son and Daughter-in-law- Lowell and Twila Trotter of Cocoa, Florida

Daughter and Son-in-law- Renee and Michael Holmes of Marion

Daughter and Son-in-law- Mary Ann and Bruce Sellars of Marion

Six Grandchildren- Lori Gulley (Curt)

     Rebecca Winn-Schlink (Eric)

     Lana Lenzini (Todd)

     Buddy Sellars (Andrea)

     Joey Sellars

     Aimee Belt (Andy)

Seven Great Grandchildren- Tabitha and Wesley Lenzini

     Samuel, Stephen, and Sarah Sellars

     Autumn and Ashton Belt

Sister- Bernetha Ralston of Loves Park

Several Nieces and Nephews

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Grandson- Eric Michael, three brothers- Donal, Russell and Connie Thomason, two sisters- Barbara Sims, and Norma Wells.

Graveside services will be held at 3pm on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at Thomason Cemetery in Wayne City, Illinois, with Mr. Buddy Sellars officiating. Family and friends are asked to gather directly at the cemetery. Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion is assisting the family with final arrangements.

For those who prefer, memorial donations may be made to the Marion 3rd Baptist Church, Hospice of Southern Illinois, or the American Red Cross. Envelopes will be available at the graveside service or at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home; 800 N Market Street; Marion, IL 62959.

    I am thankful that I got to befriend Velma at Heartland Hospital. She was sweet, helpful, concerned. caring and had a great sense of humor. I’m sure shes busy in Heaven, I know there is a Heaven because I was there once. Its amazing, now it will even more Amazing.

    She watched our babies in the church nursery for years. Always a sweet smile when we showed up with a kind word on how they did. She was a very good friend. She will be sadly missed. Loved her like my own mom. She is walking with Jesus and your Dad now. It dosen’t get any better than that.

    Rev and Mrs Trotter were good friends of my grandparents, J. Marvin and Lucille Powers from Mt. Vernon Illinois. I have known them as kind, giving, and God loving persons that inspired others to. R their best selves. My husband and I live in Marion and would like to express our deepest sympathies to the family as well as thanks for carrying out the legacies of these wonderful persons.
