George A. Brown, age 96, of Herrin, Illinois, passed away at 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2020 at Herrin Hospital.

George was born in Herrin on September 4, 1923, the son of Horace and Mahalaha (Sutton) Brown. He married Dixie McPherson in Herrin on May 8, 1953 until she preceded him in death on August 31, 2014.

Prior to retirement in 1982, George worked for Comfort Heating for 28 years.

George was a proud United States Navy Veteran who served six years in World War II. He served in the South Pacific as a minesweeper on various ships. He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion and Masonic Lodge all of Herrin.

Survivors include his son, Lowell Brown of Herrin, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Dixie and one sister.

George’s wishes were to be cremated and no services are being held.

Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin is assisting the family with the arrangements.
