Douglas Richmond Linton

Dec 14th, 1950 - Jan 26th, 2016

Herrin- Douglas Richmond Linton, age 65, of Herrin, passed away at 5:11am on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at Herrin Hospital.

Doug was born in Herrin on December 14, 1950, the son of Dwayne and Margaret Ruth (Richmond) Linton. He married Phyllis E. Keeling in Paducah on July 10, 1985. They shared thirty years of marriage. She survives in Herrin.

Doug’s three passions were music, aeronautics and his grandson Max. He began his music career at the young age of thirteen and was playing professionally within a year. Soon he was in recording sessions with the Egyptian Combo and was on several nationally released records as well as appearances on television and radio shows. Doug performed and traveled with several bands over the years including Prana and Gun Runner. His last group was The Band 64 which had only performed once this past October. Doug’s love of flying came from his father, Dwayne Linton, who was an avid flyer and was a decorated Royal Canadian Air Force spitfire pilot in WWII. In the past few years Doug’s life was full of fishing, model cars and computer games with his grandson, Max. His life was full but ended much too soon – he will be missed by his many friends and family.

Doug and I joined the Egyptian Combo within months of each other. He seemed so young then… only 14, with me being an ‘old man’ of 18. We played MANY important concerts during those first three or four years until the Vietnam War took our bandmates across the planet to make music for the troops and native villagers. He and I remained stateside to go on to separate projects. Before too long, we got back together in the PRANA project that he already had underway. We tripped the light fantastic for about three years with our glam-rock band, sporting coiffed hair/ white colored musical equipment/ tight pants/ bright stage lighting, etc.. We had big backing from Blytham Limited Booking Agency which allowed us to use roadie, a giant box van and two or three automobiles, traveling all the way from the Canadian border to Mississippi. It may have been me who was the elder statesman, but it was undoubtedly DOUG, who had the vision to project the image(s) of Rock’n'roll STAR we tried to adhere to. I really enjoyed all of my years with Doug and his r’n'r persona. I’d go back and do it all over again if only I could. Doug… get that big rock’n'roll act together there for the big venue in the sky… I’ll be joining you pretty soon.

    Phyllis, Rick, family and friends,

I became friends with Doug away from his music. He took me flying, watched Cardinal Baseball and spent a lot of time talking and telling jokes. Doug was the
first person I would stop and see when I would get back to S.I. to visit my family.

Doug had a heart of pure gold. His love and devotion
to his parents, especially when they became ill, was
without question. Doug and Phyllis dedicated their lives to his parents’ care…..to the very end.

Doug never asked for anything, but he gave everything.
His care for others exceeded normal limits. He helped
others up until, he could no longer help himself.

He always had that special smile on his face and that special chuckle……followed by a bigger smile!

Doug was simply a wonderful guy and a good friend.
    I will miss him everyday.

Having spent a great amount of time with my friend, I can say I knew him well, and will miss him dearly. We spent many years attached at the hip having a wonderful time traveling and playing music together, living life to the fullest. Wow! What a good and caring man he was. We had experiences that many would only dream of, as well as growing musically during our time together. I will miss him and always be thankful that I was allowed to spend some of my life with him……Chris Bernhard

I grew up across the street from Doug and Ricky. and the sound of “Gail Winds” from their driveway was the sound of summer to me. The boys were a few years older than I was, and they always seemed to lead such exciting lives! Many evenings my whole family enjoyed hearing the band practice. I was fond of their parents, and the whole family was so creative. Sorry to lose him.
