Herrin- James Douglas Duncan, Sr., age 76, of Benton, formerly of Herrin, passed away at 5:40am on Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at Westside Rehab and CareCenter in West Frankfort.

James was born in Harrisburg on January 22, 1937, the son of Ward and Sybil (Ferrell) Duncan. He was raised in the PentecostalChurch in Herrin. James was in the first graduating class of the new HerrinJunior High School in 1951, graduating from HerrinTownshipHigh School in 1955. He studied at Southern Illinois University for three years, majoring in Photography and later opened his own studio-Photography by Jim Duncan in Benton. Before opening the photography studio, James worked on line construction and for CIPS. In 1987, he went to the Union Electric in Belleville and 309 local.

He married Margaret Quillman in Mississippi on March 8, 1953. Together, they have shared sixty years of marriage. She survives in Benton.

Mr. Duncan was a proud United States Army Veteran, enlisting in February of 1957. Jim was sent to FortBragg and was to become a paratrooper in the 82nd Missile Command. He was a member of the Benton Elks, Benton American Legion, and IBEW Local #702 in West Frankfort.

Jim enjoyed playing sports. He liked basketball- but loved his Tiger Football. He made many friends while playing sports and has remained friends with many of them his adult life.

Jim led a full and happy life- which he shared with his beloved Margaret. He has left behind his legend in his family- which includes:

Daughter- Crystal Foster of Herrin

Son- William Scott Duncan and wife Rita of Thompsonville

Son- Jon Duncan and wife Dora of Benton

Nine Grandchildren- Karla Gunner, Jara Piper, Paul Warren, Danny Warren, Doug Warren, Robbie Warren, Travis Duncan, Taylor Duncan, and Jon Tyler Duncan

Sixteen Great Grandchildren

Two great great grandsons

Brother- Willard Duncan of Chicago

Sister- Phyllis Surweic and husband Bob of Elkart, Indiana

He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter- Ashley Ann Duncan, grandson- Dustin Eric Duncan, and brother- Larry Duncan.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, November 30, 2013 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin with Rev. William G. Elliott officiating. Burial will follow at HerrinCityCemetery with military honors provided by Herrin Military Ceremonial Team comprised of Freeman Spur American Legion, Herrin American Legion, and Herrin VFW Post. Assistance will be provided by the National Guard Flag Honor Detail. Visitation will be held from 5-8pm on Friday, November 29, 2013 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home.
