Herrin- Ruth Geneva Levan, 91, of Herrin, passed away at 10:50 PM, Monday, May 4, 2015 at Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin.

Geneva was born on May 13, 1923 in East St. Louis, IL to Ernest and Mary Lou (Lacy) Stephens. She married Herman John Levan on September 21, 1946 in East St. Louis. He preceded her in death on May 27, 2003.

Early in her career, she worked as a dental assistant and telephone operator in St. Louis. Later she worked the assembly line at Olin in the Ordill area and retired as playground supervisor at Chittyville School.

She was a faithful member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. She was also a proud member of the “No-Name Club” which began as a group of ladies sewing and evolved into a social group which included great trips including one to Hawaii. In her spare time she enjoyed spending time at the family cabin in Cave-In-Rock. She was a kindhearted and devoted mother who never missed a ball game or social event of her only daughter- Mary Jo.

Survivors include-

Daughter- Mary Jo Hall of Herrin

Grandson- Evan John Hall of Herrin

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother- Thomas Woodrow Stephens.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00AM, Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. Monsignor Ken Schaefer will officiate. Burial will follow at San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin. Visitation will be from 6:00PM – 8:00PM, Friday, May 8, 2015 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.

    We were so saddened to learn about the death of Geneva. Mary Jo, you and Evan have our deepest condolences. Your mom was a wonderful woman, who was full of laughter and a lot of fun. We always enjoyed her company. We’re sorry we’ll be unable to attend the funeral. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
