Marie Vansaghi, 100, of Marion, passed away on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 11:07 am surrounded by her family at River to River Assisted Living Center.

Marie just recently celebrated her 100th birthday, she was born November 4, 1914 in Orient the daughter of Alex and Lillian (Pry) Smothers. She married Joe “Blackbird” Vansaghi on June 21, 1939 in Herrin and together they shared over 46 years of marriage until his death on October 12, 1985.

She was a former member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church and currently a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Marion Women’s Club. Marie served as Treasurer of the American Cancer Society.

Survivors include;
Daughter – Virginia “GiGi” Gregory and husband Ronald D. of Marion
Three grandchildren;
David S. Hendricks and wife Deborah of Huntsville, Alabama
Barbara L. Stoecklin of Marion
Lynn A. Hill and husband John of Marion
Eight great grandchildren;
Aaron Hendricks and wife Jennifer of Huntsville, Alabama
Kourtney Brownlow and husband Daniel of Murfreesboro, Tennessee
Ryan Stoecklin of St. Louis, Missouri
Taylor Stoecklin of St. Louis, Missouri
Kaily Stoecklin of St. Louis, Missouri
Tyson Stoecklin of Marion
John Michael Hill II of Marion
Ali Hill of Marion
Four great great grandchildren;
John David, Anna Grace and Michael Owen Hendricks of Huntsville, Alabama

Preceded by her Parents, Husband, two brothers – Eugene and Wayne Smothers and sister Nadine Baney.

The funeral mass will be Saturday, November 15, 2014 at 11 am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Monsignor Ken Schaefer and Father Richard Mohr officiating. Burial will follow in San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin. Visitation will be Friday evening from 5 –8 pm at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion and from 10 am until the time of service on Saturday at the church.

For those who prefer memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or San Carlo Cemetery. Envelopes will be available and accepted at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home, 800 North Market Street, Marion, Illinois 62959.
