Herrin- GARY WAYNE BARWICK, age 69, of Herrin, passed away at 4:55am on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion.

Gary was born in Herrin on July 12, 1944, the son of Virgil Sylvester and Wilma Bell (Snyder) Barwick.

Mr. Barwick was a United States Army Veteran, having served during the Vietnam War. Gary also spent one year serving in Germany. He was a member of the Herrin American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. Gary was a past member of the Herrin Eagles and Herrin Elks.

Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law- Paul and Jeannie Barwick of Herrin

Brother- Richard and Dawn Barwick of Herrin

Sister and brother-in-law- Melody and John Hutton of Herrin

Niece- Crystal Hillard of Independence, MO

Nephew- Jason Barwick of Savannah, GA, formerly of Herrin

Several Great Nieces and Nephews

He was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew- Steven Barwick.

The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the doctors and staff at the Community Living Center at the VA Nursing Home, the nurses and staff at the VA Home Base Primary Care, and the doctors and staff at the Herrin Hospital. The excellent care and compassion shown is greatly appreciated.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin with Rev. Don Colson officiating. Entombment will follow at Egyptian Memorial Gardens in Energy with military honors provided by Herrin Military Ceremonial Team comprised of Freeman Spur American Legion, Herrin American Legion, and Herrin VFW Post. Assistance will be provided by the National Guard Flag Honor Detail. Visitation will be held from 9:30-11:00am on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home.

    My deepest sympathy to all of you and your families. Gary was a really special guy. I remember all the times that he would come into Moochies and visit with my dad (Mike) and my mom. Gary will be greatly missed. God Bless.
